October 9th-12th, 2026

Where?

Grand Canyon National Park- South Rim, Arizona, USA

Why Should I Go to the grand Canyon with you?

Dreaming of the Grand Canyon but worried about the challenges of traveling at your own pace? We get it! That's why we created the Fat and Happy Camper Jamboree – a supportive and inclusive adventure designed specifically for plus-size travelers and those with disabilities.

It's Paced for People Like Us

Have you ever been someplace you were really enjoying, but felt like you were holding everyone else up? This trip was made for and is led by someone who knows that feeling. Instead of rushing, we are going to go the pace that works best for everyone and still gives you a full experience of the canyon.

You get to experience something new with supportive people

If you've never hiked or gone to a national park before, this is an opportunity to do so with people who want you to have a great time, while providing you with emotional support and the insider information that can help you have an amazing time.  We'll have check-in's before and after each experience so that you can be assured that you have the moral support you need to have the best time possible.

Ok, but i'm in a Wheelchair. What hiking can i do?

I'm so glad you asked! All of the items in the itinerary can be accessed with mobility aids, including wheel chairs and scooters, because they are paved paths or use the wheelchair accessible buses. There are also many hotels in the area to choose from, in case you would rather not camp.

October 9th

Welcome to the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon! After settling into your chosen accommodations – whether it's setting up your cozy campsite within the park or checking into your hotel – get ready to immerse yourself in the canyon's magic. As the afternoon transitions into evening, we'll gather at a prime vantage point to witness the spectacle of a Grand Canyon sunset. Watch as the vast landscape transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues, a truly unforgettable start to our adventure. Afterward, you'll have the opportunity to join us for a casual dinner at one of the delightful eateries along the Rim (at your own expense) or explore the area and dine at your leisure. As night descends, and if conditions allow, we'll gather around a crackling campfire for warm drinks, sweet treats, and engaging conversation under a starlit sky.

October 10th

Today, we embark on a gentle exploration of the Grand Canyon's fascinating geological history along a captivating trail. We'll meet in the morning to begin a leisurely walk where you'll uncover the stories held within the canyon's very layers, learning about the immense timescale and powerful forces that shaped this natural wonder. Midday, we'll pause to refuel – feel free to enjoy a packed lunch amidst the scenery or opt to dine at one of the Rim's various establishments (at your own expense).

In the afternoon, we'll hop aboard the scenic Hermit's Rest shuttle, allowing us to effortlessly access a series of breathtaking viewpoints along this renowned route. Prepare to be amazed by the ever-changing perspectives and photo opportunities as we soak in the grandeur of the canyon from different vantage points. We'll return to the heart of the Grand Canyon Village in the late afternoon/early evening, giving you time to wander through its historic shops, charming hotels, and informative museums before dinner. For those seeking a bit more immersion, an optional walk along the Rim Trail back towards the village offers unique perspectives and invigorating fresh air. As evening approaches, we'll again have the opportunity to dine at one of the village's eateries (at your own expense). After dinner, we'll gather along the rim to marvel at the celestial display above, and if the park is hosting an evening program, we may choose to participate in that as well.

October 11th

Today is yours to embrace the Grand Canyon in a way that resonates with you! We'll begin the morning by meeting and then venturing to a prominent trailhead. From there, you'll have a choice: enjoy a refreshing stroll along a paved section of the Rim Trail, offering stunning vistas and a peaceful escape, or for the more adventurous, descend into the canyon itself via a well-known trail, turning back whenever you feel ready (Going down is optional, coming up is mandatory).

The afternoon opens up for your personal exploration. Immerse yourself further in the wonders of the National Park, discovering hidden gems and utilizing the park's resources. Alternatively, you might choose to take a trip to the charming town of Williams for some unique shopping and dining experiences, or journey east to explore the fascinating landscapes and cultural heritage of the neighboring Navajo Nation parks. As the day draws to a close, we'll reunite at a spectacular viewpoint to share one last breathtaking Grand Canyon sunset as a group. Afterward, we'll come together for a communal potluck, sharing delicious food and camaraderie. As the stars begin to pepper the night sky, and if permitted, we'll gather around a warm campfire for relaxed conversation, marshmallows, and hot cocoa, the perfect ending to our canyon adventure

October 12th

As our Grand Canyon Jamboree draws to a close, it's time to pack up and prepare for your journey home, filled with incredible memories of our shared adventure. This Sounds Amazing, But What About...

To ensure the best experience for all participants, and to provide you with the most up-to-date and accurate information, specific logistical details will be shared with registered attendees closer to the Jamboree date. This includes:

  • Precise Locations: While we've highlighted the areas we'll be exploring within the South Rim, exact meeting points, campsite assignments (for campers), and specific venue details will be provided in your registration confirmation and subsequent communications.
  • Getting to the Grand Canyon: We understand that travel planning is important! After you register, we'll provide helpful resources and general guidance on transportation options to the Grand Canyon South Rim, including information on nearby airports and potential driving routes.
  • National Park Entry: We'll share current information regarding Grand Canyon National Park entrance fees and where you can purchase your pass.
  • Activity Levels: While we've described the activities, registered participants will receive more detailed information about the general difficulty level of planned walks and hikes, including estimated distances and any significant elevation changes, to help you feel prepared and choose activities that suit your comfort level.
  • What Gear Do I Need to Bring To Participate in Activities?

    • A system that can carry at least 2 liters of water and keep your hands free. Personally, I love having a hydration backpack. It holds your snacks, your water, and anything else you may need while keeping your hands free for your hiking poles. If you choose to use water bottles, a backpack with accessible pockets or a fanny pack with water bottle holders can be excellent options.
    • Hiking Poles are a game changer! They can help you go longer and farther because they can help take weight off your joints.
    • A First Aid Kit with any adaptive gear, equipment or medicines that is unique to you. We will have a general first aid kit for blisters and small boo-boos, but nothing specialized. There is a medical clinic on site at the Grand Canyon South Rim, but they are only available M-F in October. The nearest hospital is in Flagstaff, about 90 minutes away under the best conditions. If you have a serious medical emergency, ground and air ambulances are available. The fee will vary on your insurance and is payable to the medical transportation company. If at all possible, you want to be as independent as you can be when visiting National Parks.
    • If you are on a special diet, bring your snacks, food and beverages that support it. While there is a grocery store on site and many food options, there is no way to guarantee that they will have what you need. (But if you've been doing this for awhile, you already know that.) The snack bags we provide will have all kinds of healthy and less so options, but I can't promise they will meet the needs of every special diet. Water is easily accessible on the Canyon Rim.
    • You may want to bring lightweight camping chairs with you to better enjoy the times when we are watching the sunset or enjoying a campfire.

    Important Health and Safety Considerations

Our Fat and Happy Camper Jamboree is designed to be an inclusive and enjoyable experience in the outdoors. However, it's important for all participants to understand their own physical and mental health limitations and to take the necessary precautions.

Please be aware that the organizers of this event are not medical or psychiatric professionals. We are outdoor enthusiasts dedicated to creating supportive group adventures. While we strive to create a safe and accommodating environment, we are not equipped to provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Before registering for the Grand Canyon Jamboree, we strongly encourage you to:

    • Consult with your physician or other healthcare providers: Discuss your participation in hiking and camping activities, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, mobility limitations, or mental health concerns. Ensure that your doctor or relevant specialist confirms that you are able to participate safely in the planned activities.
    • Be aware of your personal limitations: Understand your body's signals and do not push yourself beyond your comfort level. Participate in activities at a pace that feels right for you, and feel empowered to take breaks or opt out of any activity.
    • Bring all necessary personal medications and adaptive equipment: Ensure you have an adequate supply of any prescribed medications and that any personal mobility aids or adaptive equipment are in good working order.

Assumption of Risk and Limitation of Liability:

By registering for and participating in the Fat and Happy Camper Grand Canyon Jamboree, you acknowledge and agree to the following:

    • You are voluntarily participating in this event with full knowledge of the potential risks involved, including but not limited to physical exertion, uneven terrain, weather conditions, wildlife encounters, and accidents.

    • This includes, but is not limited to, any failure to seek medical advice prior to participation or any failure to adhere to your personal limitations during the event.

Our goal is to create a positive and empowering experience for everyone. Your health and safety are important to us, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring a safe and enjoyable Jamboree for all. If you have any specific health concerns, please feel free to discuss them with us so we can do our best to accommodate your needs within the scope of our non-medical expertise.
